The Carolina SciQuarium project had to tie into the existing facility and required converting the Gems and Minerals Gallery into the TriceraShop, and the old gift shop into the Fresh Market Cafe. This facility is North Carolina’s only inland aquarium featuring a variety of water-dependent animals including penguins, sharks, otters, eels, stingrays, a rare fishing cat, an anaconda, and fish of all shapes and colors.

Parking, access, and traffic flow was a challenge as part of the main parking area for the facility was chosen to be the new home of the Carolina SciQuarium. The main entrance had to be demolished and included demolition of a large concrete reinforced steel canopy.

The exterior of the Carolina SciQuarium is as unique on the outside as it is on the inside. The facade is constructed of 2 types of metal wall panels, and a pressed composite wood product called Parklex (imported from Spain).

New Atlantic installed the life line of the Carolina SciQuarium: the Life Support Systems (7,500 gallon, 2,500 gallon, and 2,400 gallon tanks and piping) support the 6 exhibits (Shark Reef, Fishing Cat, Otter, Amazon, Harbor, and Penguin). The total water system is 100,000 gallons.
